Due to insufficient seats/ I couldn’t be bothered to walk through all the carriages to find a seat, I stood at the area located at the end of each train carriage.
There were 4 other guys standing in the area. Not very big actually.
1 guy was probably carrying a precious painting can’t even afford to put it down on the ground the entire journey. (although it was wrapped in garbage bag)
the other 3 guys were just standing there.
The conductor started checking our tickets.
One of the guy ignored the conductor.
Conductor: From York?
Guy: *shake head*
Conductor: can I see your ticket please?
Guy: *start searching pocket and take out wallet*… (I was guessing he didn’t have a ticket already)
End up no ticket… Slight altercation between conductor and guy about not having a ticket and where he’s going.
Conductor even listed out the fine that will be imposed… about 400 pounds I think. The guy didn’t have money to buy a ticket on the spot which probably would have solved the problem
Conductor: Can I see some ID. He got some crumpled up bank statement and birth certificate. Called someone with blackberry and did some ID check (train conductor also can do ID check with … :S) Don’t know if the ID was verified. But the conductor kept the birth certificate and told the guy to get off at the next station to talk to the station police.
Guy: *swear* you can’t take my birth certificate
Conductor: Now you want to be careful with your swearing that’s a totally different offense.
Guy: Turns around piss…
Reach the station…
All the guys left except the guy holding the artwork.
I ended up leaning out of the door to see what would happen next. Saw the conductor talking to 2 other people.
When I lean back in the guy with the artwork was grinning at me and said “we all want to see the guy getting dumped don’t we..” and he leans out too.
It was kind off a trigger.. that sentenced played over in my mind a while.
Then my friend came along and asked me what I was doing leaning out of the door looking (and made sure I knew that wasn’t the right station :S)… and I told him about the guy… and when my friend asked whether the guy is in trouble.. the guy with artwork nodded his head up and down quite vigorously. :S :S :S
I honestly couldn’t be bothered if he bought a ticket. But somehow I still wanted to know the outcome. And I guess I was curious how much trouble did he get himself into, although I did not really WANTED him to get into too much trouble. Maybe the guy holding an artwork couldn’t stand guys who did not buy ticket.
Rather similar to accidents actually. People will slow down and have a look. People will wonder what happened when they see an ambulance stop outside a house.
If may end up as some gossip they can tell during some conversation. Or become part of a chit chat. But there’s no actual relation to them.
Curiosity.
Somehow this incident caused me to ramble about it. I’m not very sure why it interest me so much. Probably its because how humans react. And I’d rather have positive thoughts in my mind then to hope people suffer more.
A thought flew threw my mind at lightning speed:
I just pay for that fella’s ticket. But he could have helped himself by not getting on the train in the first place. Yeah probably couldn’t get home without the train.. But how did you get to York?
Nyek I’m not saying I have a lot of money going to help people here and there. Just a thought.
.
I did wonder though.. If this was Malaysia, later that guy suddenly snatch somebody’s handbag run off or pull out a knife. Hmm Malaysia may not be dangerous but then nobody knows what somebody has in mind. I have to say it made me really alert until we reached the station and the guy got down. I even purposely moved so I would be no where near the guy as he walked down the train. And I did wonder if he’ll grab someone’s handbag as they get off the train.. Nothing happened in the end
People. An in built sense of curiosity. What a mixture.
